A thinner coat can be a normal part of your dog’s life, or a sign that something needs attention. As your prosper mobile dog groomer, we want to help you care for your dog gently while keeping their comfort and health at the center. If you’ve noticed persistent hair loss, bald patches, or sudden thinning, contact your veterinarian before scheduling a grooming appointment. Grooming can support a clean, comfortable coat, but it cannot diagnose or treat the cause of hair loss.
Prosper mobile dog groomer: Why might your dog’s coat be thinning?
A dog’s coat grows and sheds in cycles. Hormones help regulate those cycles, so health changes can affect how the coat looks and feels. Other factors (including age, season, stress, nutrition, and friction) may play a role, too.
Hormones and health changes
Hypothyroidism is one possible cause of coat changes, particularly in middle-aged and senior dogs. It may be associated with a dull or sparse coat, changes in energy, or weight gain. But those signs can have other causes, and only a veterinarian can evaluate your dog and decide whether testing is appropriate.
Parasites, allergies, skin infections, and other medical conditions can also affect the coat. If you see itching, redness, odor, sores, scaling, or repeated chewing, don’t assume it’s simply seasonal shedding. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s guide to hair loss in dogs explains why a veterinary assessment matters.
Senior-age coat changes and seasonal shedding
As dogs get older, their skin and coat can change. Some dogs develop a drier or thinner-looking coat, while others need more help staying clean and mat-free. Seasonal shedding may also become more noticeable in fall or spring, though indoor living can make shedding less predictable.
Normal shedding shouldn’t leave clear bald patches or cause ongoing discomfort. If you’re unsure whether your dog’s coat change is typical for them, your veterinarian can help you sort it out.
Stress, nutrition, and everyday friction
Stress or a recent illness can affect your dog’s coat quality. Nutrition matters, too: a complete, balanced diet supports healthy skin and fur. Ask your veterinarian before changing your dog’s food or adding supplements.
Thinning fur can also leave skin more exposed to friction. Bedding may rub against elbows or hips, while tails and ears may be more vulnerable to rubbing or tangles. Check these areas regularly, especially if your dog rests on the same surfaces or wears clothing that catches the fur.

Prosper mobile dog groomer: When should you call the vet first?
Please contact your veterinarian before grooming if your dog has:
- Persistent, sudden, or worsening hair loss
- Bald patches or thinning in distinct areas
- Itchy, painful, red, flaky, or smelly skin
- Sores, scabs, or repeated skin infections
- Other changes, such as unusual tiredness, weight change, or increased thirst
A gentle bath or brush cannot address an underlying hormonal condition, allergy, parasite, or infection. Your vet can examine your dog and recommend next steps. For general information about coat health, see VCA Animal Hospitals’ guide to a healthy dog’s coat and skin.
If your dog has a new coat change but no urgent symptoms, make a note of when it began and take a photo in similar lighting each week. That can help you describe the pattern during a veterinary visit.
Prosper mobile dog groomer: Gentle coat care at home
When your veterinarian says grooming is appropriate, a light touch is key. Thin or sensitive areas may be easier to irritate, so keep sessions short and stop if your dog seems uncomfortable.
- Brush gently. Use a soft slicker or bristle brush suited to your dog’s coat. Work slowly and avoid pressing hard against the skin.
- Bathe thoughtfully. Use lukewarm water and pet-safe products made for your dog. Rinse thoroughly, dry your dog completely, and avoid bathing more often than needed.
- Keep an eye on the skin. During brushing, check for mats, redness, flakes, odor, or new spots where the coat looks sparse.
- Ask before adding omega-3s. Omega-3 supplements aren’t right for every dog, and they don’t replace a veterinary evaluation. Ask your vet whether they make sense for your pet.
Avoid aggressive de-shedding or close clipping on a thinning coat unless your veterinarian and groomer agree it’s suitable. The coat may not provide as much protection from cold, and clipping won’t solve a medical cause of hair loss.

Prosper mobile dog groomer: North Texas weather and a thinner coat
In Prosper, McKinney, and Melissa, warm days can give way to sharp North Texas cold snaps. A dog with a sparse coat may chill faster, especially when older, wet, or spending time outdoors. Keep your dog dry and warm, and ask your veterinarian whether a coat is appropriate for them.
During a bath, use lukewarm water and make sure your dog is fully dry before heading outside. If your dog wears a sweater, check the fur beneath it for tangles or rubbing. A comfortable fit matters: fabric that repeatedly catches on thin areas can add friction.
Prosper mobile dog groomer: What gentle professional grooming can, and can’t, do
Professional grooming can help keep your dog clean, comfortable, and tidy. It can’t restore hair lost because of an untreated medical condition, and a groomer should never diagnose the reason for thinning. If a coat change looks concerning, start with your veterinarian and share any care guidance with your groomer.
